The reverse of the embroidery is visible in the photographs and provides wonderful evidence of its handmade construction. The irregular thread paths and carried floss reveal the considerable amount of work involved in creating the design. The embroidery appears to have been counted and stitched directly through the linen rather than worked on a separate canvas.
Two sides of the outer edge is also hand finished, with matching floss worked repeatedly around the perimeter. This additional detail gives the cloth a beautifully cohesive appearance and speaks to the care invested in its construction.
The precise maker and country of origin are unknown. The geometric counted-thread design has similarities to several European folk embroidery traditions, but without provenance it would be inappropriate to assign it to a particular country or region.
