Item Details, Condition & Measurements

A remarkable and substantial antique Victorian leather-bound volume dating to 1873.

This is Volume I of Portrait Gallery of Eminent Men and Women of Europe and America by Evert A. Duyckinck, published by Johnson, Wilson & Company of New York. This impressive work contains biographies and original steel-engraved portraits of some of the most influential figures in history, literature, politics, science, and art.

What makes this example especially desirable is that all forty-six engraved portraits are present and complete with their original protective tissue guards. Subjects include George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon Bonaparte, Jane Austen, Marie Antoinette, Walter Scott, Andrew Jackson, Alexander von Humboldt, and many other notable historical figures from Europe and America.

The original Victorian leather binding retains its gilt lettering and decorative spine details. Beautiful marbled endpapers remain intact and add to the book’s visual appeal. Whether displayed in a library, study, office, or antique collection, this volume has tremendous presence and historical character.
