An exceptionally well-executed piece of vintage American studio pottery, this squat lidded stoneware jar combines a richly textured earth-toned exterior with a striking cobalt blue glazed interior. At approximately 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide, the vessel has a substantial, sculptural presence despite its relatively compact dimensions.

The fitted lid is particularly distinctive. Rather than a simple knob, the potter created an applied sculptural finial composed of looping, twisted clay forms that read almost as a knot. It gives the covered vessel an architectural quality and demonstrates the considerable amount of handwork involved in its construction.

The underside has a broad unglazed stoneware foot with visible throwing rings. I have carefully examined the vessel and lid and have found no signature, pottery mark, chop, initials, or other maker identification. The maker therefore remains unknown, and I am selling the piece as unattributed studio pottery rather than assigning it to a particular artist.

Estimated Circa: 1970-1990
