Condition: Very good vintage condition with no obvious chips, cracks or repairs observed. The irregular rim, glaze variation and subtle surface irregularities appear consistent with its handmade construction. Normal evidence of age and previous use may be present. This signed vintage studio pottery bowl combines a beautifully hand-thrown form with an unusually expressive green and blue glaze. Measuring approximately 8.25" in diameter x 4" tall, the bowl has a substantial rounded body, exposed foot and gently flared, organically irregular rim.
Layers of forest and celadon green mingle with blue, blue-gray and earthy tones across the glossy surface. Visible throwing lines and natural variations in the form preserve the character of the maker's hand and give the bowl considerable decorative presence.
The underside bears hand-incised initials appearing to read "SM" or a similar monogram. The maker remains unidentified. The piece is believed to originate from East Tennessee or Western North Carolina, although that provenance has not been independently documented. Estimated Circa: 1970–1999.
Its restrained palette and sculptural form make it particularly well suited to Mid-Century Modern and organic modern interiors. Display it alone on a walnut console or coffee table, incorporate it into a collected pottery grouping, or use it as a distinctive decorative bowl.
