Rather than assign this quilt a traditional pattern name that cannot be documented with confidence, I have described the construction precisely. Each repeating block contains 20 individually pieced sections arranged around a Nine Patch-derived design, creating a much more complex pattern than a conventional Nine Patch. The blocks are separated by broad blue gingham sashing that gives the entire quilt its distinctive country character.
Construction & Craftsmanship
The combination of practical machine piecing and extensive hand quilting is characteristic of the way many American utility quilts were made during the middle decades of the 20th century: the sewing machine handled construction efficiently while the actual quilting remained a hand process.
