At approximately 6 inches tall and 6 inches wide, the vessel has a substantial, sculptural presence despite its relatively compact dimensions.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe fitted lid is particularly distinctive. Rather than a simple knob, the potter created an applied sculptural finial composed of looping, twisted clay forms that read almost as a knot. It gives the covered vessel an architectural quality and demonstrates the considerable amount of handwork involved in its construction.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe underside has a broad unglazed stoneware foot with visible throwing rings. I have carefully examined the vessel and lid and have found no signature, pottery mark, chop, initials, or other maker identification.
